"[Pain] removes the veil; it plants the flag of truth within the fortress of a rebel soul."
C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain
In order to stop pain, we must first realize we will never stop all pain. Life exists on a razor thin line of struggle. In order for mankind to evolve, there has to be struggle. Too little struggle and we would have become too lazy to evolve. Too much struggle and we would not have been capable of persevering and evolving.
Realizing that we cannot stop all pain, we must then start to study the cause of pain in order to determine which pain is and is not acceptable.
Pain can be categorized in to two separate categories: the internal and the external.
Internal pain would be pain on a psychological level. A broken heart, night terrors, depression, etc.
External pain would be pain on a physiological level. A broken leg, cancer, etc.
While both can cause the other, and can be interchangeable, both have their own distinct causes.
External pain can be dealt with on a biological level and can be addressed with medicine and/or psychological treatment.
Internal pain, while it can be addressed psychologically, tends to be more long lasting and elusive.
Can pain be addressed memetically?
